The Scotch Whisky Experience - Gold Tour
Now onto the experience itself! For Christmas 2018, Natalia bought Joseph a gold tour of the Scotch Whisky Experience, because it’s always been a dream of his to drink his favourite drink on the Royal Mile with his Dad. Needless to say, they had a great time!
The tour begins with a really fun, quirky experience which will see you taking a ride in a traditional whisky barrel, yes you read that right! The ride takes you around an interactive experience for a crash course on the history of Scotch Whisky and how it is produced, we won’t delve into this here as we wouldn’t want to ruin the experience for you, but maybe just a quick run through of the basics…
To say Scotch Whisky is just ‘Whisky from Scotland’ wouldn’t do this wonderful spirit justice. Scotch is so much more complex, but it’s all based around a very simple formula that has been carefully manipulated and mastered over hundreds of years.
For whisky to qualify as a scotch it has to meet certain criteria. It has to be produced and aged in Scotland in oak casks for a minimum of three years, and must only contain three ingredients, Malted barley, water and yeast. You might be asking how these three simple ingredients can be combined to produce such a huge variety of different whisky’s? Well, that’s one for the guys at The Scotch Whisky Experience to answer so we’ll leave it to the experts.
The barrel ride is followed by several interactive talks and videos that dive into Whisky a little more, as well as each of Scotland’s five whisky producing regions, Highlands, Lowlands, Islay, Campbelltown and Speyside. From there, you head up to a traditional tasting room to sample a classic malt from one of these regions, each of which has its own traditional flavours and style of whisky.
You’ll get to enjoy your taster while browsing the world's largest collection of scotch whisky, with over 3,300 of some of the rarest bottles you will find in the whisky world, and you get to keep your own Glencairn tasting glass to take home as well!
If you’re lucky enough to be treated to a gold tour ticket, you also get to enjoy four more samples from the different regions in the upstairs bar, before you make your way back out onto the Royal Mile to continue on exploring Edinburgh.
Scotch Whisky is synonymous with Scotland, and no visit would be complete without at least trying ‘The Water of Life’. Even Nat enjoyed trying some of Joe’s whiskys during our stay, and we can’t wait to head back up to Scotland to keep on exploring and try all the whisky we can!
Slàinte mhath! (pronounced Slange Var!) that’s cheers in Scottish Gaelic!
